Mentally spending lots of money...
I've been thinking that when we get back from vacation, I'll look into setting myself up with a large refillable propylene tank for my torch and then start saving for a kiln. It's going to run me about $50 in additional hoses and such, and then add in another $40-50 for the fuel itself...
And then I was reading online today about how much people love upgrading from a Hothead to a Minor torch. *want* They say there's a helluva learning curve because the flame is much hotter. There were comments about molten lava-like flowing and drips all over the workbench and all I could think was "WHOA! WANT THAT!!!"
I found a "kit" which offers the minor torch and all the hoses and regulators you need for $300. I'd still need fuel, two tanks for a minor: propane and oxygen. But the beads I could make!!! The Hothead torch I have is really nice for a starter torch, but the flame is not that powerful. I've been frustrated by how long it takes me to melt the glass. It can take an hour or more to make a more-than-basic bead with a Hothead. People who upgrade to the minor or other hotter torches all talk about how fast you can work the glass! *covets* Plus they also say how quiet it is. The Hothead sounds a bit like the burner on a hat-air balloon.
I'll have to call down to the village offices and see if there are any restrictions on fuel tanks on residential property out here. If there aren't, I think I'll skip the refillable propylene setup and go right for the duel fuel system. *wants!!!*
There is also an option to have the gas company tap right into the natural gas line in the house and run a line for your torch too. I need to do some reading on the safety/risk factors and do some cost analysis on that. It would be nice to not have to screw with locking up refillable tanks and running lines and such. And if the village does have restrictions as far as fuel tanks, this may be my only other option. I need to do more research on it though.
...But I do have some serious lust for a minor torch now.
And then I still have a kiln to save up for. *sigh* So many toys I wantneed. Must get monies
